Parental Alienation Syndrome

Mental Condition

  A term coined by child psychiatrist Dr. Richard A. Gardner (1985) to describe a cluster of symptoms that appear in a child who has been psychologically manipulated by one parent to unjustifiably reject, fear, or show hostility toward the other parent.


Dr.Gardner described it as:

“A disorder that arises primarily in the context of child-custody disputes, whereby a child becomes aligned with one parent and campaigns against the other without legitimate justification.”  

Parental Alienation Behaviour

Legal Condition

One parent, mostly mother, manipulating a child to have a hostile, rejecting, or fearful relationship with the other parent, often without legitimate cause. Its form of intimate partner violence and can be considered as domestic violence. Indian courts have started to consider this a serious issue affecting the mental health of both the chidren and affected parent.
